Jenn’s August Reading Goals

Okay, so I’ve come to accept that TBR lists just don’t work for me. I don’t know why but they just don’t. It seems as though even if a book is at the top of my list of books I’m dying to read as soon as I commit them to a TBR list they’re DOA. They become the last book I want to read at the moment. So, I’m taking away the pressure. No more TBR lists for me.

That being said I still want to make goals for reading each month. I want to challenge myself without blocking myself into a corner. I feel as though making general goals for each month may keep me on track whilst also keeping me interested.

So, these are my 4 reading goals for the month of August.

  1. Read 8 books.
    • These can be any book I want to read at the time. This also includes the 4 Thrice Read Book Club books we will be reading in August. This goal may be a bit lofty since I’m a teacher and school starts back next Wednesday. But, go big right?
  2. Read 2 Adult novels.
    • These two books would be counted for goal number 1. My comfort zone when reading is definitely YA. A lot of the time I feel a bit overwhelmed by the Adult side of the bookstore. Part of this comes from being more involved in the YA bookish world. Therefore, I don’t see a lot of Adult recommendations. So, I’m going to try to get out of my comfort zone and discover some awesome Adult novels.
  3. Read diverse books
    • I want to make an effort to read more diverse books. I want to see just how many diverse books I can read this month. If you haven’t checked out the project #WeNeedDiverseBooks you should definitely go check out their website here. This is an important movement and I want to do what I can to help support it. Their mission statement is as follows:
      • “We Need Diverse Books™ is a grassroots organization of children’s book lovers that advocates essential changes in the publishing industry to produce and promote literature that reflects and honors the lives of all young people.”
  4. Read a book that I’ve owned for over a year.
    • I’ve really got to start getting to work on my TBR shelves. I am currently on a book buying ban until I read 10 books. I need to read the books that I’ve been procrastinating about reading. One book is at least a start.

Do you have goals or a TBR for August? What does your list include? I’d love to hear how you guys challenge yourselves when it comes to reading!

  1. I LOVE this idea of monthly goals instead of a regular TBR. I rarely ever stick to my TBR, so I might try to do something like this next month!
This month really the main goal is to read as much as I can before college starts, or any summerish books that have been sitting on my shelves for too long.
You have some great goals for this month, good luck! 🙂

  2. I have this same problem. I have about 50-60 books in my TBR pile. Sometimes I get a really good book binge in and conquer 4-5, and then other times, like now, I don’t have a chance to read but I keep buying. And you’re right about when you put a book on your list and then it becomes the last thing you want to read. Happens to me all the time.
As for your adult novels and diverse novels…. You should check out my blog- sweetteaandpaperbacks.wordpress.co all I write are book reviews 😉

  3. Really liked the concept of reading goals instead of a fixed TBR. We’re the exact same, the moment we decided me must read a book we lose all interest. It’s so much better to just read what you feel like at the time.
