A Gathering of Shadows – Book Review

“Everyone’s immortal until they’re not.” ― V.E. Schwab, A Gathering of Shadows

I completely changed my September TBR to read A Gathering of Shadows and you know what? It was such a good idea.

I am going to start this with a spoiler warning. Honestly if you haven’t read either of the Darker Shades of Magic books I suggest not going any further.

When you start AGOS, all of our favorite characters are scattered throughout Arnes and the rest of the world that Red London exists in.

But, we’re in luck because a magical competition hosted by Red London brings everyone back together.

Let’s start with Lila. We meet Lila on the ship of the Night Spire with Captain Alucard Emery, who happens to be one of my favorite characters now. Alucard has been working with Lila in developing what magical abilities she may foster, which we later learn is quite vast.

Then there’s Kell and Rhy.

Our poor princes find themselves confined to the palace and restless to the point of unhappiness. Both feel stuck and part of it comes from the binding spell that exists between them.

So, when I started A Gathering of Shadows, I was incredibly anxious to see Lila and Kell’s relationship and where it would go. I was not let down. Schwab gives us classic Lila and Kell moments and then more. I think the pull of these two characters in scenes together is that they are equals. Lila is one of few people that Kell can be completely honest with and it seems the same situation for Lila.

Also, we get to dig more into Rhy’s life in this book. In A Darker Shade of Magic we got a glimpse of the charismatic flirty prince but only surface level. A Gathering of Shadows explains who Rhy is, who he loves and the demons he’s faced since the darkness swept over Red London.

This was an easy read for me simply because it was so good. If you loved Lila and Kell and Rhy in the first book, then you can be sure that you’ll love A Gathering of Shadows.

So, yet again, another 5/5 rating for a V.E. Schwab book.

Have you guys read it? What did you think?
