Owlcrate Unboxing – October

If you haven’t heard of Owlcrate yet you are missing out. I have been a loyal subscriber for about 10 months now and I am always happy with my boxes. It is a monthly subscription box. Every month you receive 3-5 bookish items as well as a newly published YA novel within this subscription box. The box is $29.99 a month.

The theme for October was “Once Upon a Dream.” In this month’s box I received 4 bookish items in addition to a newly published YA novel.

This month’s book was…

Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter. Synopsis: In the enchanted kingdom of Brooklyn, the fashionable people put on cute shoes, go to parties in warehouses, drink on rooftops at sunset, and tell themselves they’ve arrived. A whole lot of Brooklyn is like that now—but not Vassa’s working-class neighborhood.

In Vassa’s neighborhood, where she lives with her stepmother and bickering stepsisters, one might stumble onto magic, but stumbling out again could become an issue. Babs Yagg, the owner of the local convenience store, has a policy of beheading shoplifters—and sometimes innocent shoppers as well. So when Vassa’s stepsister sends her out for light bulbs in the middle of night, she knows it could easily become a suicide mission.

But Vassa has a bit of luck hidden in her pocket, a gift from her dead mother. Erg is a tough-talking wooden doll with sticky fingers, a bottomless stomach, and a ferocious cunning. With Erg’s help, Vassa just might be able to break the witch’s curse and free her Brooklyn neighborhood. But Babs won’t be playing fair…

This book is described as a dark and magical tale based upon a folklore. I am excited to delve into this story and I am ecstatic that I got it in my Owlcrate this month.

Next up are all of the bookish goodies of this month. Being a Disnerd I was excited to see all of the fairytale inspired items. I got the following items in my box:

  1. Button Bookmark by My Heart My Tribe
  2. Wizard of Oz Passport by The Unemployed Philosopher’s Guild
  3. Sleeping Beauty Bangle Charm Bracelet by The Geeky Cauldron
  4. Peter Pan Beanie by Whosits & Whatsits

I was a bit apprehensive of this month’s box originally. I was concerned about how many things they could get to go along with this theme. However, I’ve learned to never underestimate Owlcrate.

This Owlcrate is a little different from the other crate’s I’ve received from them. That being said I really liked this month’s book choice and items.

Next month’s theme is: “Wonderland” subscribe now to receive the October box!

Are you subscribed to any book subscription boxes? If so, which ones?

If you would like to sign up for Owlcrate click here. You can cancel your subscription at any time. I cannot recommend this subscription enough. Seriously, you will not be disappointed.

If you have any questions about the box please leave them below.

  1. I’ve just received my first MyBookishCrate box and it included the same book :-), but the items included were different. I’ve also already ordered the November box, which also has the Wonderland theme. I’ve wanted to try Owlcrate as well, but living in Europe I think it makes more sense to order a European based subscription box 🙂 (One exception to this is the special Gemina box I ordered from the YAChronicles 🙂 )
