Jenn’s May 2017 Wrap Up

I’m going to be honest, I had a pretty good reading month in May. I was really at a peak in my reading. I couldn’t get enough stories this month. In all I read 14 books. Let’s hope this is a sign of how my summer will go reading-wise. But, let’s be real that’s probably not how it’s going to go.

So, here are the books I read this month:

The Hate U Give
 by Angie Thomas

This was an awesome book to start the month. We read it as a part of a Thrice Read Saturday discussion. I was truly amazed by this book and gave it a 5/5.

Simon
Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

I got really into contemporary books this month. Simon was my first in a line of many contemporary novels that I adored. Overall, I gave this book a 4/5 stars. You can check out my review here.

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

Salt to the Sea was a book we read for a Thrice Read Saturday discussion. This book killed me. Seriously, Salt to the Sea has a huge impact on me. The characters were amazing. This historical fiction novel was amazing. I gave it 5/5 stars.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

May was the release month for ACOWAR by Sarah J. Maas. For me that meant rereading the first two books in the series. This was the first time I reread ACOTAR. During my first reading of this book I wasn’t the biggest fan. I liked it but had some issues with the book. Upon rereading it I saw some of the set up for character development and plot points, which made me appreciate this book even more. I gave it a 4/5 stars. Check out my post about rereading books.

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

Okay, as I said this month I reread the ACOTAR books. ACOMAF was a little bit different for me. From my first reading of this book I loved it. My second read of this book just solidified that. Yet again I gave this book a 5/5 stars.

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas

Finally, it was time to read ACOWAR. I was highly anticipating this book. It did not let me down. I loved this book. It was the perfect addition to this series. Maas made some shocking decisions with the plot that I could really appreciate. We read this book for a Thrice Read Saturday discussion. I gave it 5/5 stars.

Adnan’s Story by Rabia Chaudry

I’ve been a huge fan of both the Serial podcast and the Undisclosed podcast. Both of these are true crime podcasts about the Hae Min Lee murder and Adnan Syed’s conviction. So, when I got a chance to listen to this audiobook I jumped at it. I was a bit disappointed by this book and gave it 3/5 star. If you’d like to see my complete thoughts check out my review here.

Welcome to the Slipstream by Natalka Burian

I received this ARC through NetGalley. It was not my favorite book. The beginning of the book had a lot of potential. However, I don’t think that the book lived up to that potential. I gave this book 3/5 stars. If you would like to read all of my thoughts on this book check out my review.

Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley

This was another book I received through NetGalley. I adored this book. It is a contemporary that dealt with some real dark issues. The novel was impactful and fully developed. I have now made it my mission to get everyone to read this book.  My rating for Words in Deep Blue was 5/5 stars. It’s that good guys. You can check out my full review here.

American Girls by Alison Umminger

I read this book as a part of our Thrice Read Saturday Discussions. This was a rough read. I was not a fan of the book. I gave it 2/5 stars. Check out discussion post to see all of the reasons I did not enjoy this book.

Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen

This was a book I read with my 6th grade students. My kids definitely loved it. I, however, was not as big of a fan of the book. I find this book to be a little bit boring. But, it’s got a great story and elements within it. My overall rating of the book was 3/5 stars.

Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix

This is another reread for me. I read this book with my 6th grade classes that had not read it yet. I loved this book just as much this time as I had when I read it the first time. It’s tough to keep your love for a book when you read it 6 times in a day. But, this book is that good. I gave it 5/5 stars.

One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus

I’m sure you’re seeing a pattern here. This is another NetGalley ARC that I received. In my review I stated that this book was like Pretty Little Liars meets The Breakfast Club. I enjoyed this book but was not wowed by it. It’s a fun and short read. I gave this book a 4/5 stars.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

Yep, it’s another reread. Since Always and Forever, Lara Jean just came out I knew it was time to reread this series. The first time I read these books I fell in love. Jenny Han’s writing style is endearing and beautiful. This book is my favorite contemporary novel of all time. I gave this book 5/5 stars.

  1. I totally agree with Salt to the Seas.
Those short chapters that give you perfect amounts, leaving you turning pages for more!
Though I find myself really hating the glory-seeking persona. Like extreme hate.

As for random recommendations; have you tried The Death House – Sarah Pinborough
