First Impressions Friday

Ok, so the first time I did this, I really enjoyed it.

However, the first time I stuck specifically to contemporary. This time I’m changing it up a bit. I’m going to read the first chapter of books that have been on my shelf that I haven’t had an opportunity to read yet, however, they can be anything but contemporary.

So, lets start with the first:

Riders by Veronica Rossi

Writing Style: I actually started reading this over summer because Jenn talked so highly of it. I struggled to get into it then, but after rereading the first chapter I have an entirely new appreciation for the main character.

Characters: The main character, as stated before, is interesting. I’m even more interested in the supporting characters.

Predictions: The main character will embody War?

Will I finish: I think so. However, I started it once so I feel a little discouraged.

Given to the Sea by Mindy McGinnis

Writing Style: This is such a different writing style than I’ve seen from McGinnis. The sentences are longer and the writing seems more complex. I’m into it though.

Characters: I have one character with the first chapter and it’s Khosa. She’s interesting and complicated sounding. I love the idea that her bloodline only exists to be sacrificed.

Predictions: There are a lot of characters in this book that I haven’t even glimpsed yet. I can say that I don’t think Khosa will sacrifice herself. But then again, McGinnis always does what I don’t expect, so maybe she will sacrifice herself.

Will I finish: It’s Mindy McGinnis. Hell yes I’m going to finish.

World After by Susan Ee

Writing style: Short, concise sentences. I read Angelfall a little over a year ago now and I liked it, but I wasn’t in love. I think that’s partially because the writing style dragged a bit in the first. This one seems much faster paced.

Characters: All my favorites from the first book are in the very first chapter so I’m already on board for it.

Predictions: I think we’re going to find out a lot of messed up stuff that happens to children being experimented on. Raffe will come back. Mostly because I want him to come back though, not because I actually know.

Will I finish? Eventually, yes.

What do you think? Any suggestions for books to add to my first impressions?
