First Impressions Friday

I’ve been teaching summer school for the last two weeks and in my down time I’ve started reading Onyx and Ivory by Mindee Arnett.

I’m about 1/3 of the way through and I’m not sure if I want to keep reading. So, I figured I’d give you guys a first impressions Friday and then decide whether I should finish it after.

Onyx and Ivory by Mindee Arnett

Writing Style: The writing style for Onyx and Ivory is pretty simple yet intriguing. She writes from third person limited

Characters: So far, the characters are all pretty surface level. I have someone that I think will be he antagonist and I’ve already spotted what I think will become a love triangle. I’m hoping the characters just need a little more time to develop.

Predictions: I actually don’t really have any predictions. I think a civil war will occur but I’m unsure whether it’ll be in this book or the next. I do, however, predict that I will never actually like Kate.

Will I finish: Honestly, I’m on the fence. While I don’t hate the book, I also don’t find it very interesting. So far it kind of feels like the shell of a fantasy novel.

So, you guys tell me. Should I keep reading? Will the end totally pay off?

  1. I’ve been in that position before and I totally get how you feel. For me, my first impressions are usually right and I don’t end up liking the book. It may be different for you, but that’s usually my experience.

  2. I have not read this one, but the last couple of books that I felt this way about at the start, didn’t improve by the end. I say go with your gut and put it down. You may go back one day to it, but there are so many other good books out there, why waste time on something that isn’t interesting you.
