Facebook is launching a new Friends-only News Feed

Facebook is rolling out a new tab to see the posts that really matter to you

Mark Zuckerberg has just announced the launch of a new tab named feeds (Publication feed in French) which allows you to see the latest publications of your friends, groups, and Pages separately and in chronological order.

This separate News Feed was eagerly awaited by users who felt they were “missing” posts that really interested them, drowned out by other posts suggested by Facebook’s algorithm.

In the video below from the CEO of Meta, we can see the new tab feeds. Once on the dedicated tab, users can switch between the different categories offered: Favorites, Friends, Groups, and Pages. tab Favorites lets you add the friends and Pages you prefer.

A new News Feed that will not be applied by default

In his Facebook post, Mark Zuckerberg states: “The app will always open to a personalized feed on the Home tab, where our discovery engine will recommend the content we think will interest you the most. But the Feeds tab will allow you to further customize and control your experience. »

This means that when you open the Facebook app, the algorithm-controlled News Feed will show up first. This corresponds to the tab Welcome which will now be a “place of discovery” with personalized recommendations. So you will need to tap on the Feeds tab (Publication feed) so you can access a personalized newsfeed with only posts from your friends, groups, or Pages.

Facebook follows in the footsteps of Instagram, which now offers a chronological news feed but which is not applied by default, which was disappointing for some users.

A way to compete with TikTok and retain its users?

On the one hand, the news feed dedicated to friends responds to a strong demand expressed by users, which explains why the novelty is deployed by Facebook. On the other hand, the fact that the tab Welcome is now more of a place of discovery with personalized recommendations and new content is reminiscent of the experience already offered by TikTok (discovery of videos). It would seem once again that the Meta group is very much inspired by its competitor, but that will probably not be enough to slow down the booming Chinese application.

It may also be a way for Facebook to retain its users on the application by offering them a more personalized experience because the social network has been losing ground for several months: 1 million active users were lost in February 2022.

International deployment next week

As of today, some users will be able to see the new tab dedicated to the personalized news feed appear in the Facebook application. On iOS, this tab is at the bottom of the app, and on Android, it’s at the top. This tab will then roll out to all Facebook users worldwide over the next week. Stay tuned!
